Book: Clean Language - Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds

Updated: Jul 11, 2020

This post is my reading notes from the great book "Clean Language: Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds" from Wendy Sullivan and Judy Rees.

If you are interested in Coaching, Clean Language is definitely an area you want to invest some effort in and reading this book is a good way to get started: I highly recommend :)

Well of course the book covers way more than this but those are only half of my notes :P

What I particularly like was all the tips and exercises to develop your skills!

I got interested in Clean Language following a recommendation from my Coach Supervisor Dr Clare Beckett Mc Inroy (thanks) to incorporate it in my coaching.

However weird the questions seem at first, I have been consistently surprised of how naturally my clients reacted to them and discovered new insights.

If you have book recommendations related to Coaching feel free to post them in Comments. I am doing notes on Positive Psychology in a Nutshell from Ilona Boniwell and The Essential of Theory U from C Otto Scharmer :)

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely summary! Can I please mention something that seems like a small error, which changes the meaning quite a bit?

It is in the statement "Don't ask for a Metaphor if the client already proposed one". Did you mean 'if the client didn't already propose one'?

I plan to share this with other practitioners, again - thanks

Hi Donna, thanks a lot!

what I mean here is that it is unnecessary to try to make a client think about a new metaphor if they already expressed themselves using one (Some people naturally use a lot of images to express themselves). In that case we should just go with the flow :)
